652 Thomas J Butler went to school in Bansha and presumably came home to work on the farm from an early age. He was married twice. His first wife was Nora Loughman (known as Noni) and she provides an intriguing link as the Loughmans of Co Tipperary were closely related to the Harrington family to whom we are now about to turn. We know no more of Noni Butler save that she is said to have died giving birth to their only child, a boy called John Butler, at some point in the late 1920s.

In 1934, Thomas was married secondly to Josephine Harrington, daughter of Florence and Molly (Loughman) Harrington. Her father was born at Milleens near Eyeries on the north side of the Beara Peninsula in West Cork
