After that he emigrated to the US, arriving in new York on 1 May, 1902 on the liner Lucania headed for 10 Elm St. Calumet, Michigan. After returning from the U.S. he was living/boarding with his brother Mark in Ardgroom Village at the time of the 1911 Census of Ireland. He was then age 34 and was fishing for a living - probably on his boat the 'TOTO'.

He subsequently lived in Allihies Village, Beara, Co. Cork after he married Lizzie O'Shea who owned the Post Office there.
